My 4 year old is still in diapers. Any tips for potty training?
We have been trying. She just gets sick eaily. We will get going on it and she will get sick and she will have to be put back in diapers.
Firstly, don't put a child back in diapers after taking them out of them because it's a step backwards and you'll make it twice as hard for yourself next time round. It also confuses the child.
Get rid of the diapers totally - throw them away. Dont buy any more. Keeping the diapers is usually for the parent's benefit rather than the child's and you don't want to go back to them. Let your child see you throw them away. Go on a shopping spree with your child to buy some "big girl knickers" with something good on such as princesses or her favourite disney character or something, she must be into something like that!
The reward chart idea is a good one... a wall chart with stickers for when she goes to toilet... don't use the potty she's too old for that and it's not worth the hassle of then having to change from potty to toilet. You may need to buy a little step to put next to the toilet so she can get on it by herself.
If she wets herself, if possible, change her into OLD clothes. Clothes that no longer fit, boys clothes, boring plain clothes etc. Sometimes children wet themselves because 1. they like the attention, 2. they like changing into nice clean clothes. It may seem cruel but it often works.
Also, when she wets herself, don't shout or have a go at her, just change her and say that it's a shame she can't get a sticker because she didn't go in the toilet.
When she does use the toilet, give her lots of praise, give her a sticker and if possible make the sticker chart so that there are spaces for the stickers to go and on every 5th space, make it extra special such as a different colour or a star shaped space. Then when she reaches 5 stickers, she gets a treat such as playing with a special toy or you get to do some cooking together. Then you do that every time she hits that 5th marker, and she'll have something that she can aim for which is visible, and it's 5 because children that age need a low number.
Remind your child often "do you need to go to the toilet?" every 15 mins if you have to. And go with her to help and to make sure she goes. Sometimes children get so carried away when they're playing and it's too late when they realise.
Lastly, if you get stressed out or if you've tried these things and they haven't worked go to see your doctor as it may be a medical thing such as an infection (but unlikely). But don't put her back in diapers whatever you do!!! And reward, not punish.
Hope this helps! Good luck and keep with it!!!
