How do I get a jazz tone on this amp?
The music teacher at the school is always getting up in my socks about my guitar not sounding jazzy enough through his amp. At home, I can get a nice jazz tone, but let's ignore that.
The guitar is a telecaster thinline and the school amp is a fender blues deluxe.
I tried explaining that the blues amps are designed with tube gain in mind, but regardless:
How do I get a full mellow jazz tone from that amp? What settings have worked for you?
Also: I'm getting flat-wound strings aswell.
The previous answerer is correct; this is not a jazz style amp and was never intended to be. Your music teacher has his head up his butt. But part of the blame is on you, too. Every guitar player knows that his amp is an essential part of his tonal pallet. This is why we own different amps for different playing styles, and why no serious guitar player would ever depend on using somebody's amp other than theirs. Therefore, the solution to the problem is to bring your amp to school on the days that you have jazz band rehearsal. And don't complain about hauling it back and forth as this is part of your instrument and the choice of instruments was yours. Finally, I would strongly caution you to not put flat wound strings on your Thinline. These strings will sound terrible to you and won't solve anything. Instead, get some pure nickle strings which will have the jazzy tone you are looking for without the dead, no sustain sound of flat wounds. I use Gibson L-5 Pure Nickle Wound and love the tone. You will have to find them from one of the on-line string sellers or have your local music store order them for you.
